A Day With Mary Burton

Working with A-List make-up artist, Mary Burton is always a dream!  She's responsible for most of our favorite Angelina Jolie looks on and off the screen and countless Halle Berry films... So I always jump at the chance to team up again- this time, was for a private photo shoot at Madonna's former Beachwood home in the Hollywood Hills! Together, we designed multiple looks for a publicity shoot with director/photographer James Van Alden and up-and-coming ingenue, Madison Walls, from his latest film, A Numbers Game.
While I do both make-up and hair, Mary does only make-up, and is famous for saying, "if the hair doesn't look good, my make-up doesn't look good!"  Collaborating with Mary is fun because I get to concentrate on more detail and setting the latest new looks off the runways and on to the red carpets!

I prefer to do updos last in editorial shoots, because I like to really tease it up- I began with blow drying out Madison's hair for the long sleek looks and then for the updos loads of Big Sexy HairSpray and the medium blonde hair pins they make at Naimie's Beauty Center.

Madison has a full head of hair in real life, but for photos I like to use clip-on extensions on all my clients, with real human hair by Louis Ferre, available exclusively through Naimie's Beauty Center!  It's a healthier alternative to extensions, that doesn't rip or tear your hair, giving you an instantly fuller look for the runway or red carpet!  For this most voluminous look in the infamous Moroccan Room, I used

To The Nines On The Back Nine!

Former Laker Girl with Lifetime Laker Fan support LAPD through golf!
Gorgeous On The Golf Course In Under An Hour?!
Red Carpet AND Golf Course Ready in under an Hour!

To give Paula Abdul lasting coverage and extra moisturizers for a glowing day outdoors, I started with a light base of La Prairie Cellular Radiance Night Cream on her face and neck- why use "Night Cream" during the day, you might ask? But if you can afford $930 per 1.7 oz I would suggest rubbing it all over your body on the daily, to feel like the bottom of babies feet!  Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer SPF20 in the shade of Walnut is perfect for Paula's rigorous indoor/outdoor schedule!  It provides ideal protection from harmful and damaging rays of the sun, its lightweight formula moisturizes the skin while adding a smooth, healthy glow to her complexion all day long.

NARS Original Multi-Purpose Maui Stick goes on creamy smooth and leaves a sun-kissed glow, but I use it only on the cheeks, and use their Laguna Bronzer all over the face and neck for finishing touches.  For those on a budget, you can't beat this all-over cure for looking good with the quick swipe of a bronzer brush for just $34!

When all else fails, and you are about to go on-camera and don't even have FIVE MINUTES to freshen up, there is nothing like LIP GLACE to make sure they can "read your lips".  Be sure to have Laura Mercier's Lip Glace in Pink Tulle to replicate Paula's glowing smile in these pics!  At $24, this lip gloss that also creates a fuller lip, will last you longer than it takes for a friend to swipe it "accidentally"!

The Hot Tools Marcel 1108 curling iron is an "Industry Secret" after a quick blow-dry or if the client has already air dried, and a spritz of Sebastian Shaper Plus for a "Natural Look" to last all day.

Whether you are rushing from the board room to daycare or from the red carpet to the golf-course, it is important that you take at least five minutes to collect yourself and set your intention and goals.  How we present ourselves to the world impacts how our message is heard and you deserve all of the tools at your modern day disposal.

From The Archives: Timeless Kim Basinger summer look

Enjoy this Timeless Kim Basinger look for the summer:

Movieline cover.  Hair and Make-Up By Mario Lara.
Here's HOW:
Semi-blow dry hair, twisting into a sexy high ponytail and secure with a rubber band.  Whatever wispy pieces remain can be styled around the face or controlled with bobby pins.

In the summer months, I prefer to use a foundation with a lighter feel and an spf, like Laura Mercier's line of tinted moisturizers with an spf of 20.

Using taupes to create the light smoky eye will help to contour and shape the eye, while still remaining fresh for daytime.

A desert rose stain on the lips and cheeks will make reapplication throughout the hot summer day easy, with just the carefree swipe of some lip gloss. I find Lise Watier's Plumpissimo "Le gloss Nude", leaves lips looking particularly juicy.

Drinking your ice tea with a straw, not only keeps your lipstick from wearing off, but also, as Kim pointed out to me on the set, it will keep your teeth from getting unsightly tea stains too!
